Fifth grade students have a very busy and productive year. Some of the main objectives are to teach the students organization, management and responsibility. As with any road of life, the students are learning that the trip is a lifetime journey. We are trying to instill in them that the choices they make now can lead to a positive outcome in their futures. Complementing these goals, the classes receive instruction from Police Officer Haggerty. He is our schools DARE officer, and he will help the students to realize that all decisions have positive or negative consequences.
The mathematics series used by the Medford Township elementary schools is the Everyday Math program. Its instructional design was carefully crafted to capitalize on student interest and maximize student learning.
The teachers in grade 5 use the physical science unit from Scott Foresman. They learn classifying matter, investigating motion, forms of energy, and electrical energy.
The language arts program is very involved at the fifth grade level. Through a literature-based approach, the students learn skills to improve their reading ability and comprehension. In our reading and writing programs, students learn how to research information and use it. The novels selected, such as Maniac Magee, The Sign of The Beaver, In the Year of the Boar, Jackie Robinson, also deal with conflict resolution through various current themes such as self-esteem, family dynamics, and prejudice reduction. Some of the projects are flannel board retellings, poetry, essays, alphabet research, cartoons, and reports.
